Balcombe celebrates centenary anniversary of the WI Federation

Lady Denman was elected as the first Chairman of The National Federation of Women’s Institutes following its formation on October 16th 1917. Today this event is celebrated in Balcombe with the unveiling of a Blue Plaque on the Victory Hall, for which Lady Denman is also remembered.

This Hall was built in memory of the Balcombe men who served in the Great War 1914-1918. The people of Balcombe under the leadership of Lady Denman of Balcombe Place caused this Hall to be raised in memory of those who served their country in the Great War. It was opened by Lord Denman on November 10th 1923.
