Balcombe Village Fete

This year — 2019 — our village fete takes place on Saturday, July 13th on the recreation ground between 12 noon and 5 pm, followed in the evening by further entertainment provided by the Balcombe Christmas Tree Society’s bar and accompanying band. An individual or group, willing to cook and serve the food for the evening, is still being sought. This is usually a slot taken up by students who cook and sell chilli, or something similar, to raise money for their chosen charity.

This year’s fete will feature many of our usual attractions —burgers and sausages on the barbecue cooked for you by Balcombe Scouts, the Pimm’s Tent, the Balcombe French Association serving their ever-popular crêpes, and the pupils from Balcombe and Lindfield Dance School performing their delightful routines. There will be dozens of other stalls filling the park with a variety of things to buy and entertainments to have a go at.

Again, there will be a Silent Auction with putters invited to bid for one of our many donated prizes, and our annual raffle, with many exciting prizes donated by our generous local restaurants, Half Moon pub, businesses and supporters. Both the raffle and the Silent Auction raise money for village groups and good causes.

The ever-popular arena events will be central to the day with lots of attractions being timetabled for a busy five hours of entertainment. One of the highlights for many people happens late afternoon when our hardworking committee members stage the Children’s Games — musical hoop jumping, egg throwing, sack races and running races.

And don’t forget to look in the Balcombe Parish Magazine (June issue) for all the categories you can enter in the Flower & Craft Show — Home Produce, Flowers, Craft & Photography, Beers, Wines & Sprits, Cooking & Preserves, and Children’s Classes. There’s something for everyone and all ages. People only have to bring their entries along on the day, between 9.30 am and 11 am to see them displayed.

Do put the date in your diaries and come along to enjoy what we hope will be a wonderful afternoon and evening. The fete is always a convivial occasion and an opportunity to catch up with friends and neighbours, enjoy some food and drink in the sunshine (hopefully), try your hand at some traditional fun and games, and support our village societies and groups.
