Balcombe wins Gold! THREE CHEERS…

It’s not just about hanging baskets! South & South East in Bloom is about community and overall environment, too.

This year, Balcombe, on only its second attempt, has scooped the top accolade – a prized Gold Award.

In the 2020 competition, the organisers were forced to take a new approach and judge individual entries electronically, with visits made impossible by the coronavirus pandemic.

Balcombe’s entry, a 26-page Powerpoint presentation, can be seen here, and included many community-wide events and activities that were organised during 2020. These not only involved efforts to enhance the village environment, but also ones designed solely to bring the village together during these difficult times.

Our village entry, on behalf of Balcombe Parish Council, won favour with judges who awarded us their highest accolade of Gold in the category of Parishes in Bloom.

This official acknowledgement of Balcombe’s stunning environment and community is double cause for celebration as it was only our second year of entering the SSEIB competition in recent times. In 2019, Balcombe won a Silver Gilt for its entry.

Also in the competition, the Guerrilla Gardeners group of volunteers were given the award of “Thriving” the second highest achievement in the Community Gardening Award category. The group is part of Balcombe Gardeners’ Association.
